Águilas is installing touch-feely models of local sights for the benefit of the visually impaired
The typhlological models reflect the commitment of Águilas to inclusive tourism
Among the raft of measures approved by the Town Hall of Águilas to promote sustainable and inclusive tourism in the municipality is an initiative to create typhlological or tactile models of some of the main sights for the benefit of the visually impaired.
According to Mayoress Mari Carmen Moreno, accessibility and inclusivity are cornerstones of the project to modernize tourism in Águilas, and to this end the four models will represent the castle of San Juan de las Águilas, the Auditorio y Palacio de Congresos Infanta Doña Elena, the El Hornillo railway loading jetty and the Isla del Fraile.
Models of this kind already exist in the Mar Menor municipality of San Javier, where they represent aircraft which have played important parts in the aviation history of the town and have proved popular among both visually impaired and fully-sighted visitors, and now they are to be included in the tourist attractions of Águilas. They are to made from aluminium and accompanied by texts in Spanish, English and Braille, as well as QR and NaviLens codes at a total cost of 86,450 euros.
It is expected that they will be in place before the end of the year.

Águilas boasts 28 kilometres of coastline, with many fine, sandy beaches, sheltered coves and unspoilt natural beaches. It is a great summer favourite with Spanish holidaymakers, so always has a superb programme of concerts and activities throughout the summer, as well as the biggest carnival in the Region of Murcia, 40 days before Semana Santa (Easter.)
Throughout the year it also has a number of museums and historical attractions, a castle with fabulous views overlooking the bay and several other points of interest, all of which make it an good place to visit for days out. Throughout the year the tourist office runs monthly guided tours and the route of the railways, which explores the railway history of the town.
The tourist information office is located in the Plaza de Antonio Cortijos, just a short walk from the sea front and Plaza de España, a cool, shaded space in which to enjoy a coffee.
