Work to repair the water distribution canal between Los Valientes and Campotéjar in Molina de Segura, which collapsed during the gota fría flooding in September, is progressing apace according to the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura (CHS).
The section of the canal between Los Valientes was ruptured during the flooding, sending such a large amount of water towards the reservoir of Santomera that the flood gates had to be opened in order to avoid the water level rising above the top of the dam, and initially the CHS created a bypass in order to reconstruct the main waterway. Once this is complete, it will again be possible to send all of the water transferred to the Segura basin from the Tajo in central Spain to the reservoir of La Pedrera in the province of Alicante.
This repair is part of the 46.6-million-euro project undertaken by the CHS to repair damage caused by the storm in September, with other aspects consisting of strengthening the banks of the River Segura while restoring them to their natural condition, clearing the “rambla” floodwater channels, repairing the water distribution canals which lead from the main Tajo-Segura supply canal and carrying out repairs at the dams and reservoirs of Santomera, Ojós, La Cierva and La Pedrera. The work is expected to be completed early next year.
