Decrepit La Manga bridge to be replaced
Half a million euros assigned to ensure safe access to La Isleta nautical club, marina and housing
The bridge to La Isleta in La Manga del Mar Menor is to be replaced by Cartagena city hall at a cost of over half a million euros.
The project was approved by the local government committee (JGL) on Saturday, a spokesperson for the council explained.
The structure of this bridge, which is situated at kilometre point 3 of La Manga and provides access to the Club Náutico, the recreational marina and several urbanisations, is severely deteriorated.
As a result, a new bridge will completely replace the current infrastructure, thus improving safety and accessibility on this essential road link.
The design features a platform of prefabricated beams, one lane for traffic, a pedestrian crossing and replacement of all the services that will be affected by the job.
And a provisional walkway will be installed to enable pedestrian access while the work is ongoing.
The job is scheduled to take four months, once the public contract has been awarded and the contractor’s plans have been officially certified.
The base estimate for the public tender is €537,615, of which €200,000 is being covered by a subsidy from the Region of Murcia government and the rest by city hall.
The municipal contribution will be allocated from the budget for 2026.
The law requires local authorities to be granted a concession in order to carry out works on coastal public domain land.
But since the national coasts department (Costas) called for this bridge to be repaired, the council has decided to apply for the concession at the same time as putting the contract out to tender, so as not to further delay a project that is considered a priority, the spokesperson added.
