July 24 Free guided visit to the palaeontological site of Cueva Victoria in Cartagena – REGISTRATION ON 13th JULY
The cave may have been inhabited by the first humans to enter Europe from Africa!
For palaeontologists the Cueva Victoria, close to the RM-12 motorway leading to La Manga, is one of the most important sites in Europe, and once again this summer there are very limited opportunities for anyone interested take a look inside with the experts still researching its treasures.
Among the remains found inside are bones belonging to human beings and thought to date from as long as 1.2 million years ago. If this is confirmed, it will mean that this is one of the first places where hominids arrived in Europe from Africa, matching the remains found at the site of Venta Micena in the province of Granada.
However, there is still some doubt over whether the remains are genuinely those of human beings or their ancestors: if they are, they most probably belong to the species named Homo erectus.
Five visiting days are planned this summer, each with two groups of up to 25 people (aged over 12) permitted. Registration is available online here from 9.00 in the morning through the website of the Town Hall of Cartagena.
The dates concerned are July 24, August 7 and 22 and September 5 and 18, each with groups at 18.30 and 19.45. Registration for the first date is available online here from 9.00 in the morning through the website of the Town Hall of Cartagena.
