Description
The MABS Cancer Support Group was founded in 1999 by five women (4 British and 1 Austrian), all of whom had had breast cancer. Originally named MARINA ALTA BREAST CANCER SUPPORT GROUP, their aim was to provide support to cancer patients and their families on the Costa Blanca and the Costa del Sol. News traveled fast and the medical profession was soon referring ALL types of cancers to the Group for support, so the name was changed to MABS CANCER SUPPORT GROUP to reflect this.
They provide information on the type of cancer, treatment, side effects, where to buy wigs and prosthesis, etc. MABS provides translators for clinic and hospital appointments, as well as drivers who will collect the person from home and deliver them to the place of treatment, wait for them, and take them home again.
MABS receives no financial assistance from local or regional governments and relies on fundraising and donations from local organisations.
The Group now has branches with co-ordinators in Jávea, Gran Alacant, Torrevieja , Murcia/Mar Menor, Mazarrón, North-west Murcia, Mojacar and Marbella, but there are supporters in most towns.
MABS Cancer Support Group is a registered charity and is funded from the community in Spain . We are non profit making and all monies raised remain here in Spain, helping the people who need it most. All accounts are audited annually by our President, Mrs Jacquelyne Phillips MBE.
People diagnosed with cancer anywhere in the world face many challenges that may leave them feeling overwhelmed, afraid and alone. If diagnosis or treatment takes place in another country this is an added difficulty to cope with, e.g. not being native can cause added stresses and this is why MABS are working to ease these problems.
As their motto says – help is just a phone call away
