Mar Menor Today
Dozens of events on offer around the Mar Menor this summer
The four municipalities which fringe the Mar Menor; San Pedro del Pinatar, San Javier, Los Alcázares and Cartagena offer a wide range of entertainments during the summer months including festivals, fiestas, free cinema on the beach, gastronomic tours and tastings, free concerts and family activities and sporting activities. These are shown below in date order, divided by municipality.
CARTAGENA What's On Mar Menor
Cartagena offers three different areas of beaches, some on the wilder Mediterranean coast, others on the calm and safe shores of the Mar Menor and others on the Mediterranean coast of La Manga del Menor which runs for 21km and separates the Mar Menor from the Mediterranean. The first 6km of La Manga del Mar Menor lie within the Cartagena municipality, as do the areas of Los Belones and the luxurious La Manga club sporting complex, and the fishing port of Cabo de Palos with its imposing lighthouse. Cartagena City itself is a beautiful port city, with a rich history and many imposing monuments including a vast Roman Theatre. SAN JAVIER What's On Mar Menor
The San Javier municipality comprises a large area on the western shores of the Mar Menor, the coastal area of which is Santiago de la Ribera, but also a substantial part of La Manga del Mar Menor, which is a 21km long strip of land enclosing the Mar Menor and separating it from the Mediterranean. For this reason the municipality has beaches on both the Mediterranean and Mar Menor coasts, and what's on events are generally described as either being in Santiago de la Ribera or "La Manga del Mar Menor", there being a substantial distance between the two. There is a ferry across the Mar Menor linking the two sections of the municipality. The main auditorium where the Jazz Festival and Theatre Festival are held are in San Javier town, which is 3km inland from Santiago de la Ribera. The municipality has a full webpage in English with complete information about the beaches, services and places of interest as well as tourist information offices, bus routes etc. Click San Javier Today
