May 2 Free guided history tour of Puerto de Mazarron in Spanish
See for yourself the legacy of the Romans, Phoenicians and other settlers in Mazarrón during previous millennia
These days the municipality of Mazarrón is probably best known for its fabulous beaches on the Mediterranean coast, but for past civilzations including the Romans the area was a renowned source of material wealth due to its mines, fish and the salting process which enabled locals to produce the prized fish sauce known as garum.
Remnants of the past still remain, and among them are the remains of a Roman house in Calle Era and the old Roman fish salting factory in Puerto de Mazarrón, which is now also home to the local archaeological museum. As well as the salting tubs and other elements of the production line, the museum also contains artifacts from the Moorish occupation of most of Spain in the early Middle Ages and other items dating well back into pre-history.
This free guided tour on May 2 is held in Spanish and starts at 10.00, lasting approximately an hour, with the maximum group size limited to 40. Bookings are accepted through the regional tourist board website here.
Strongly recommended: drinking water, walking shoes. Pets are not permitted.
The booking period begins a week before the event and ends at 13.30 on the day prior to the tour. Each participant must register separately, and participants must show proof of identity (DNI, passport, NIE or TIE). If participants are minors this must be indicated on the booking.
Bookings may not be transferred.
Under no circumstances will unregistered participants be allowed to join the group.
