Nine months after the mince pies: why Spain has a September baby boom
Birth records reveal a very predictable pattern, with one notable exception up north
Fancy a slice of cake? You're in good company. Today alone, 115,720 people across Spain are celebrating a birthday, making it the fourth busiest birthday of the year. Tomorrow will bring another 114,995 celebrations, and the day after that, 113,750 more. There's a reason for all this cake eating: September has been Spain's busiest month for births for nearly forty years running, with October trailing not far behind.It's not hard to work out why, once you count backwards nine months. Most September and October babies were conceived around December and January, when the Christmas break brings more time off, family gatherings, changes to routine and, let's be honest, probably one too many glasses of cava. Make of that what you will.
Even with Spain's overall birth rate falling steadily, from 360,617 births back in 2019 to 318,003 in 2024, September and October have stubbornly held onto the top spots. Roughly one in five babies born in the country still arrives during these two months.
Not everywhere follows the same script, though. Madrid actually peaks in October rather than September, though that still fits the broader pattern. The real outliers are further north. In Asturias and Galicia, most babies arrive in May, while the Basque Country's peak comes in March, suggesting a rather different kind of summer holiday altogether. As one expert put it, "this is a clear example of how the country's geographical, climatic and sociodemographic realities completely alter the statistics, even in something as seemingly universal as the months in which children are born."
There's a weekly pattern too. Tuesdays and Fridays are the busiest days in delivery rooms, largely down to hospital scheduling rather than nature itself, with inductions often lined up after the weekend and planned deliveries brought forward before it. Weekends and public holidays, by contrast, see around 30% fewer births. "This phenomenon demonstrates that, although human biology doesn't distinguish between workdays and holidays, the organisation of the healthcare system completely reshapes the birthday calendar in our country," the same expert noted.There's one more record worth knowing. October 1 holds the record as Spain's most popular birth date since 1920, with 118,394 people sharing that particular candle count, narrowly beating January 1 into second place.
