Summer water sports and activities for all in the Costa Cálida!
From boat trips to kitesurfing, choose your relaxing or exciting preference at the beaches of the Region of Murcia this summer!
With its calm seawater and warm climate the Region of Murcia is a perfect place for water sports all year round, and this summer the regional tourist board (ITREM) is promoting a wide range of activities on both the Mediterranean and Mar Menor coastlines.
Let’s start with sailing, where the Mar Menor is an exceptional destination for those taking their first steps in the sport due to the prevailing breezes and the lack of significant waves. The Mediterranean, of course, offers different challenges for all levels of sailors, and if you don’t have your own boat they can be hired from numerous sailing clubs (Clubes Náuticos) and marinas all along the coast!
Equally as attractive – and probably easier for most of us! – are kayaking and paddle surfing, and again the Mar Menor offers safe and tranquil conditions for all ages. However, in summer, the Mediterranean coastal resorts also boast calm conditions, and these are two of those sports where very little prior experience is needed before you can confidently explore the parts of the coast which are not so easy to reach on land!
Various routes are suggested for those keen to find some of the hidden coves and beauty spots which are better accessed from the sea!
The clear, warm water of the Costa Cálida is also perfect for diving and snorkelling, and while well-known spots like Cabo de Palos and the Islas Hormigas reward underwater visitors with a plethora of marine biodiversity, all along the coastline there is plenty to discover for both novices and experienced divers.
Back to the Mar Menor, the constant breeze and shallow waters of the lagoon make it one of the best places in Europe for windsurfing and kitesurfing, and as a result there are plenty of surf schools where equipment can be hired. This makes it possible for anyone to have a go, either with or without tuition.
For a more relaxed time, one of the best options is a boat trip. From catamarans to glass-bottomed boats which enable you to see the flora and fauna of the seabed, these trips are a comfortable and easy way to enjoy the salty sea air, and many trips include stop-offs for a swim or a little snorkelling.
Another popular activity in the Costa Cálida is traditional fishing and angling. There is a huge variety of fish both in the Mar Menor and in the Mediterranean, and organized boat trips are offered, along with all the necessary equipment, to guarantee a successful outing!
These are just some of the many ways to enjoy the beaches of the Region of Murcia this summer without limiting yourself to sunbathing, ice-creams and a lengthy dip in water to cool down for a while. Some are relaxing and others offer something of an adrenaline shot, but whichever ones take your fancy you’ll soon appreciate the range of ways in which to enjoy the Costa Cálida!
