Two Murcia roads named among Spain’s most dangerous
N-301 and AP-7 stretches in the spotlight in new national accident risk report
Two stretches of road in the Region of Murcia have once again been ranked among the most dangerous in Spain, according to a new study by the European Automobile Association (AEA). The report, based on Ministry of Transport data from 2020 to 2024, also flags nine separate high‑risk points along the AP-7 as among the 100 most hazardous motorway sections in the country.The AEA analysis looks at one‑kilometre segments of the State Road Network with an average hazard index of 82 or higher, compared with a national average of just 8.2. In other words, these blackspots carry at least ten times the usual accident risk. While no stretches in Murcia appear at the very top of the list, two do sit in positions 35 and 36 out of 295.
Both of these are on the N-301 as it passes the outskirts of Abarán, at kilometre points 357 and 359. They have featured in previous editions of the AEA list and now show a risk index as high as 247.6. Around 1,100 drivers use this road section every day, which underlines the concern around its safety.
Nationally, the report identifies the N-632 between Villaviciosa and Gijón in Asturias as home to the most dangerous points, particularly at kilometres 55 and 59, where the risk index is 167 times higher than the Spanish average. However, the single kilometre with the highest number of crashes and fatalities is at kilometre 0 of the A-77a in Alicante, which the AEA calls out specifically as the worst for accidents and deaths.
The association also takes a close look at motorways and toll roads. It notes that, although these are generally the safest roads to drive on, their danger level increased last year, with 100 segments now showing at least double the national average risk. In Murcia, most of these worrying points are on the AP-7.
On this busy coastal motorway, nine sections within the Region are highlighted as especially hazardous. The most dangerous is at kilometre 882, near San Javier, close to the junction with the RM‑1 Santomera–San Javier road and not far from the airport. Here the risk index reaches 32.5, more than seven times the national motorway average of 4.4.
The findings will likely add pressure on road authorities and the regional Ayuntamiento to keep focusing on improvements and enforcement along these key corridors, which remain vital routes for both local residents and visitors across the Costa Cálida.
