Work on new Fuente Álamo biogas plant set to begin in April
The company behind it claims it will be a major step towards sustainable energy and circular economy
Five Bioenergy, a company specialising in regenerative energy and circular economy, has announced that it will commence construction of its new biomethane plant in Fuente Álamo this April. The facility will be dedicated to transforming organic waste into biomethane while also producing osmotised water and biofertilisers as by-products of its operations.
According to Salvador Pérez, the plant's manager, one of the key benefits of the facility will be the elimination of odours caused by organic waste. “This project reinforces our commitment to sustainable development, offering an efficient and environmentally friendly energy alternative,” he stated.
He emphasised that the initiative is crucial for the agricultural and livestock sectors in Fuente Álamo, which constitute around 80% of the local economy. The plant is expected to bring economic and employment benefits to the Region of Murcia.
While biogas plants such as the one planned for Fuente Álamo promote sustainability by repurposing waste, concerns remain regarding their environmental impact. The gases emitted during biogas production can pose health risks, potentially contributing to respiratory conditions and, in extreme cases, severe illnesses or even death. Additionally, the by-products of the process include volatile compounds that can be hazardous due to their flammability and potential explosiveness.
The new Fuente Álamo biomethane plant is projected to have an annual production capacity sufficient to supply energy to 50,000 Spanish households. Additionally, it will generate osmotised water in volumes equivalent to filling more than 180 Olympic-sized swimming pools and produce biofertilisers capable of sustainably enriching over 20,000 hectares of crops. These outcomes align with European Union sustainability targets and contribute to Spain's energy autonomy.
Five Bioenergy has reiterated its commitment to innovation and the transition towards a sustainable energy model, emphasising that the project will drive local development while protecting the environment.

Meanwhile, the Regional Ministry for the Environment, Universities, Research and the Mar Menor has published details regarding another biomethane plant project in Mula, promoted by the company Bio Séiquer. The resolution, made public in the BORM, has opened a 30-day period during which interested parties can review the project documentation and submit any comments or objections.
It comes just after construction on a Baños y Mendigo biogas plant was rejected for failing to meet urban planning regulations and environmental standards, not being located sufficiently far away from human populations.
