Discover the history and most important buildings of San Javier
The free “Vía Herculea" guided tour, which on this occasion is offered in Spanish, starts at 9.30 on Saturday November 30 at the San Javier Museum, where participants can learn about the town's history from the very early days as well as getting to know about some illustrious people born in the municipality. The items exhibited here, such as an aeroplane donated by the San Javier air base, take us on a journey through the past.
The huge Nativity Scene (Belén), one of the main tourist attractions in San Javier as well as a tradition with deep roots in the whole of the Region of Murcia, is also featured at the museum.
There is then a short walk to the parish church of Saint Francisco Javier, one of the earliest surviving churches in the Mar Menor area. The temple houses several works of art by renowned artists including sculptor Sánchez Lozano and painter Muñoz Barberán.
Then it's on to the Parque Almansa, located on the former Tomás Maestre estate. Nowadays this park is a cultural landmark in the municipality, where important festivals such as the International Jazz Festival and the Interantional Festival of Theatre, Music and Dance are held.
Finally, the 2-hour tour enters the heart of the Town Hall, the Plenary Hall, where full sessions of the local council are held. members of the local government administer San Javier.
